American Public Health Association American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Caucus Margo Kerrigan Student Scholarship Application


The MARGO D. KERRIGAN SCHOLAR AWARD is named after the founder of the AIAN Caucus. At the time of her passing Margo D. Kerrigan, MPH was the IHS California Area Director. A member of the White Earth (Mississippi) Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, Margo was a respected and dedicated leader and advocate for American Indian and Alaska Native people. Margo received her BA degree in Human Biology from Stanford and an MPH from UC- Berkeley. As an active member of APHA and the first American Indian to serve on the Executive Board in its 120-year history, she founded APHA’s American Indian and Alaska Native Caucus in 1981. The Caucus honors her achievement and memory by presenting the Margo D. Kerrigan Scholar Award to promising AIANNH students as future public health professionals.





Purpose:

The American Public Health Association (APHA) American Indian, Alaska Native and Native

Hawaiian (AIANNH) Caucus is proud to offer scholarships for American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian students to participate in the 147th APHA Annual Meeting on October 24-28, 2020. This year’s meeting will be a virtual event.

The APHA AIANNH Caucus Margo Kerrigan Student Scholarship will cover registration and membership for AIANNH students interested in public health. The APHA Annual Meeting addresses current and emerging health science, policy, and practice issues in an effort to prevent disease and promote health. In addition, it provides numerous opportunities to learn about public health careers, research careers and to network with national leaders including AIANNH health professionals and elders.

Eligibility:

AIANNH full time undergraduate or graduate student and recent graduate (up to 1 year post graduation) interested in public health are encouraged to apply. Past recipients are not eligible.

Requirements:

If selected, you must agree to the following:

1) Attend all APHA AIANNH Caucus activities (leadership and General membership meetings),

2) Attend sessions for which you sign up,

3) Submit a brief newsletter article about your APHA experience, and

4) Complete/Submit a conference evaluation.

Application Deadline:

If you are interested in applying for the Margo Kerrigan Student Scholarship for the APHA Annual

Meeting, please complete the attached application form and submit all required documents by 5:00 EST September 11th 2020. If selected you will be notified by August 20, 2020.
